You know who pulled off evil long term scheming the best? Our queen, Rosamund Pike, in Gone Girl. Reading the book I was like, “WAIT! WHAT?” Then I had to go back and look for all the signs I might have missed. In fact, I think one of the only pros of the series was that you had time to understand Rob’s motives. SR: I didn’t have issue with the sexual orientation reveal. The fact that he was attracted to David was supposed to be a gut punch at the end. I hate to be that person but I have to say: the book was better!Īunty Shrimp: Rob’s sexual orientation was too big of a reveal too early. The evil, long-term scheming was not as prominent in the show as it was in the book. In the book, Adele was always nagging at Louise to get her to quit smoking, but in the show, it was just a quick throwaway line of Louise saying, “oh yeah, I quit smoking.” That was all. Also, they had six whole episodes and so much time to share the many ways Adele helped Louise in terms of her physical health, but they didn’t make it clear as to why she did that. Whether or not you’d read the book.īS: I would say they were about 85% faithful? 90%? The one thing they didn’t do in the book was reveal Rob’s sexual orientation so early. MI: It was something that was revealed at the end, so it’s clearly something they wanted you to notice. I wonder if we would have caught on to that as quickly had we not read the book.īook Snob: I asked my fiancé if he had noticed it and he said, “no.” So I guess that’s something we caught only because we read the book? It’s either that, or he just isn’t all that observant. Slow Reader: Yes! That camera angle trick was great. I loved that they did with that subtle “view from over the shoulder” technique. One of the things I was looking forward to was how they’d portray the whole astral projection thing. Right down to the details of how things happened. Miss Ice: I would say the series was largely quite faithful to the book. This review was brought to you by Slow Reader, Book Snob, Miss Ice, and Aunty Shrimp. They requested that they be referred to using pseudonyms. There is still time though to read the book before you watch them in action. We reached out to four of our readers, all of whom were fans of the novel, for their opinion on how the Netflix series fares in comparison to the book. As soon as you think you have his character figured out, you are introduced to new information and events that contradict his personality. These traits might be what caused her shocking fate.ĭavid, Adele’s husband, is depicted with two personas. Louise is inquisitive, caring and easily led. Simona Brown portrays the character of Louise, another main character in the book. The purpose of this skill is later revealed in the book. She does things meticulously and pays immense attention to detail. Adele is depicted as a seemingly vulnerable person. Irish actress, Eve Hewson, plays Adele, one of the main characters in the book. Actors Simona Brown, Eve Hewson and Tom Bateman. The book granted me escapism, and in return, I gained entertainment as I frantically read and turned the pages to see how the story unfolds. I read it every chance I got, avoiding people and conversations in the process so that I could read for long enough to find the answers to the questions posed in the book. How and why I finished the book so quickly Care to beat that challenge anyone? There is still time before the series premieres. So much, that it only took me two days to devour it. The author’s vast use of descriptive and emotive language creates tension and stimulates the feeling of wanting to know more.īehind Her Eyes is a thrilling and fascinating book. It’s creative and unique and I wish I’d thought of it myself. My favourite line from Behind Her Eyes (2017) is: “My heartbeat and headache throb in unison like mad lovers.” I initially found this description comical. Reading a book brings you closer to the authorĪ book gives you a glimpse of the author’s thoughts and the way they think. Based on the trailer, so far, they have done a great job. Hopefully, the upcoming Netflix miniseries has the same mesmerising and artistic effects as the book. It is the director’s job, however difficult it may be, to capture the essence of the story and bring it to life with film. It is guaranteed that some things will be lost when a book gets translated into film. You can’t place every detail from the book into a 30-minute episode or an hour of the film. You will see the story the way the author intended it, not the director’s interpretation. There is no better imagery than the one your imagination provides when it is guided by the author’s descriptions. If you truly appreciate a good story, read the book before you watch the series. The book from which the Netflix series is adapted.
